Ashton Carter, who served as Defense Secretary from 2015-2017, passed away unexpectedly due to a “sudden cardiac arrest” on Monday night in Boston according to a statement from his family first reported by ABC News’ Luis Martinez.
Carter served as the director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
He was 68.
