Publisher’s Note: Today’s newsletter is not a normal one. It’s not for those who are subscribed in New York, Burbank, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Antonio, or Houston. It’s not for those who are from South Texas, West, Texas or West Texas. It’s not for those in San Angelo, Del Rio or Eagle Pass. It’s for those in 830: Uvalde.
Uvalde Strong. I see that statement all around the city in west Texas town in which I was born and raised.
I see it on the signs in front of houses or the churches: Pray for Uvalde. I’ve seen similar signs praying for rain. It reminds me of yellow ribbons on trees that popped up in 2002 and later.
I see Uvalde Strong on maroon t shirts. I know I’ll see them on students going to different schools across the lone star state this morning on your first day back to school since that horrible, unspeakable day.
I saw Uvalde Strong in barbecue and Mexican plate fundraisers that are still happening to this day.
I saw Uvalde Strong when a victim left the hospital after months of care and went to thank all of the doctors and nurses for their help. She was surprised when in turned out they were applauding her as she walked out.
I saw Uvalde Strong when you welcomed your teacher back home in what seemed like miles of cars to offer comfort and love to that person who experienced unimaginable pain.
I saw Uvalde Strong here in San Angelo this past summer at Immanuel Baptist Church at a funeral that never should have happened.
I saw and continue to see Uvalde Strong when I see determined parents fighting for their children when their state leaders seem to be focused on the wrong things.
I know that Uvalde is not done being strong. Today will be nice. It will be comforting to know an entire state will be wearing your colors in solidarity with UCISD.
And, I know that the healing will take place long after the spotlight of the national news media is gone.
However, you will be up for the task.
You are Uvalde, of course. And you are strong.
